What is Moong Dal Chaat?
A famous chaat from the city of Haridwar. Popular street food and a delicious salad or chaat or snack. You may serve as you like with little variations. How to make Moong Dal Chaat?
It’s the simplest and healthiest Chaat Recipe I have tried and fell in love with.
Steps to make Moong Dal Chaat:
- Boil the dal. 1:1 ration. 1 cup dal and 1 cup water. Remeber the water should be just enough or equal level to the dal. Just cook for 1 whistle and shut the flame.
- Assemble the chaat In a deep bowl, add dal, onions chopped, imli chutney, mint chutney, salt, chaat masala and red chili powder. Add lemon juice as per taste preference. Mix well and serve in the dish. Top it with dry red chili fried and crushe (optional). Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

- 1 cup Yellow Moong Dal /Yellow lentil
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp haldi/turmeric powder
- 2 medium Chopped onions
- 2 tbsp Tamarind Chutney / Amchoor Chutney
- 2 tbsp Coriander mint sauce
- 1 tsp chaat masala
- 1 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder/Degi Mirch
- 2-3 Dry red chilies fried in mustard oil- optional
- 1 tbsp Black Salt
- 2 tbsp lemon juice or juice of 1 lemon
- 1 tbsp garam masala
- 1 tbsp Haldiram All in one Namkeen or any other namkeen or your choice
- 2 tbsp coriander leaves
- In the pressure cooker: Add washed dal and water. Add salt and turmeric powder and cook on high flame until one whistle. Immediately shut the flame and let it rest till the stem releases.
- Now, open the lid and mix the dal. There are two versions of this chaat. With mashed dal and with dry dal. For mashed dal, you may add a little water and cook for 1 min till it is completely mashed. Otherwise, let it remain the same.
- In a Bowl, Add dal, then add Imli water or 1 tsp Tamarind sauce. Then add 1 tbsp Mint sauce, fried dry red chilies crushed, and mix well. Now add the toppings. First Chopped onion, then spices -salt, red chili, chaat masala and garam masala.
- Top it with some extra sweet tamarind sauce and green chutney (optional). Sprinkle some namkeen and garnish with coriander leaves.
