Whole-wheat Veg Steamed Momo

A pleasant summer evening, cravings for something light but yummy took me to the kitchen to cook these small, adorable steamed little dumplings with hot and sweet sauce / chutney. Having its origin in Nepalese cuisine, it’s a very popular snack especially in North of India. A visit to the market, a get together at home, kitty party or just like that, Momos have become a craze here in Delhi. Originally, made with all-purpose flour they are made in both vegetarian and non-veg options. One reason that I cook them for is Health and flavor together. And if they are with whole wheat flour with the goodness of vegetables or a protein option like meat, chicken or paneer/cottage cheese, and steamed, then I would call them the yummiest healthy snack of the world. And its quick and simple preparation makes them even more quickly on the table snack.

I prepare these with whole wheat flour and stuffing is variable. Chicken being top on the list and veggies made especially for kids. As I put all pizza veggies like mushrooms, capsicum, onion, carrots (seasonal) and to add to the zing some cabbage. A very simple recipe, made in minutes and I never have leftovers for this .Rather, no matter how much I make, there is always a shortfall and I always get the last serving.

My family loves this recipe, so I had to share it with you all. Try these, and you’ll surely love it.Easy, Simple and fast preparation. Enjoy these steamed veg Momos with hot and sweet sauce.

Cup size used: 200 ml

Why this recipe health and taste is: It has the goodness of whole-wheat flour and with exotic vegetables as stuffing.

How to prepare the dough: The trick lies in making the dough light. We do this by adding a bit of corn flour .The proportion of wheat flour: corn flour will be 100:25 or 1:1/4.

Now to assemble the momos- roll a small ball into a baby chapati and put 1 tbsp. of filling in it.Now close the edges like a frill and bring it till the center and seal. Keep going this till you make all the momos and transfer them into the steamer. Steam for about 5-7 minutes or keep checking and take out till once done. You may have to rotate and tilt them over once in between for an even cook.
  4. Steaming: You can use a Momo maker/steamer .If you do not have Momo steamer then you can steam them in a kadai or rice cooker as well with the dividing attachment.
  5. How to prepare sweet chili sauce: Soak the dry red chilies in xbd cup hot water for 15-20 minutes. Grind these to paste along with the soaked water. Now add 1 tsp. oil in a pan and add this paste. Let the paste come to a boil and then add 2 tbsp. of tomato ketchup. Let it boil on simmer for about 2 minutes. Add sugar and let it boil till thick and desired consistency is achieved. You may change the amount of sugar and chili as per your taste preferences. This sauce can go with a lot of other variants and dishes. One can make it and freeze it for later use.
