As per Ayurveda, food intake during cold and cough should also be selective and light. It is advisable to have food which is light to digest, does not affect the system harshly, and contributes to reducing phlegm. The more bread, rich food, and spices you eat, you tend to worsen the situation inside your body. The following are some of the guidelines for meals during cold and cough.
- Eat freshly cooked food. Preferably hot and within 1.5 hours of cooking.
- Chew your food well.
- Eat small portions.
- Intermittent fasting of 8 hours is also advisable in some cases. (based on your body type)
- Eat easily digestible meals.
- Eat less all-purpose flour.
- Use only salt, black pepper, and turmeric till the cold lessens or you feel better.
- Keep sipping onto hot water or any hot liquids like soups, tea to feel better.
- Avoid Milk and dairy products.
- Apply some mustard oil on your nostrils and ears (outside). It helps in opening a blocked nose.
These are some general guidelines but may differ from person to person. It’s advisable to follow your body type and eating habits to avoid any issue.

We can add some lemon juice before drinking. That works wonder 🙂
Recipes & You says
Lemon doesn’t suit a lot of people including me, so I have not added the same. Also, when your throat is already under flue, lemon may irritate the throat further. If it works for you you may please add.
Shivani says
Can we make in quantity and preserved for 2-3 days and have them later
Recipes & You says
Hi Shivani, You may, but as per Ayurveda, all cooked items have a period of life. It’s best to have the cooked kadha within 4-5 hours of preparation. It doesn’t mean they spoil after that. It’s just that they might not serve you to its best.
Archana Dubey says
This is really very informative for places where flu is very common and during this tough time of corona. We can all not panic if we see minor cough and cold, instead we can consume kadha, which is ayurvedic with no side effects and will definitely give good results. Good work.

I appreciate your response. Glad you liked it. Thanks
Mayank says
I have heard from multiple sources we should put honey in hot liquid, only in lukewarm, so does it mean we first let it cool down before adding honey or put honey in steaming hot liquid ?
Recipes & You says
Mayank Ji, You can add honey to hot liquids, but not cook it. You should add it once you have sieved the kadha and poured it into the cup. Or wait till its as hot as you can sip it and then add. It’s ok then.
