Food for your soul- Food for Purification

Fasting in Ancient India had more spiritual meaning than religious. Fasting is to purify. Fasting is to calm the mind, body and soul. We have inherited this method of purification from our ancestors. It’s the Saatvik element and I call it the Saatvik Shishtachaar. Fasting helps us rise. Rise from a low consciousness to a higher consciousness. It’s to connect with our inner self. It’s to purify and detoxify. Navratri or nav-ratri, nine nights as they literally mean, is a period of fasting which mainly occurs twice in a year.Once in March and then again in October. One marks the advent of Spring and the other the beginning of Fall!

Traditionally, all the vrat recipes were simple, plain fruit based with  basic salt and pepper and no onion and garlic. Since, the purpose of it is to purify and detoxify our mind ,body and soul. So no grains ,as grains make our digestive track work more and during the change of season the digestion is sluggish. Vrat Dosa is one such recipe, along with the other dishes like: sabudana khichdi, sabudana kheer , kuttu/buckwheat pastry, simple fasting potato curry/ vrat kea loo. Easy to prepare, light on the tummy and since It’s made from buckwheat its gluten free.

Vrat dosa or Fasting dosa is a non-fermented, crisp and gluten free pancake made from Buckwheat/ water chestnut flour or both. Few people also prepare it from samak rice flour. All three varieties are delicious and can be taken with your choice of curries / vegetable or just with plain kheer or curd.

I make it two ways. One  with only Buckwheat Flour and one recipe I mix both buckwheat flour ( kuttu ka atta) and water chestnut flour (singhare ka atta) in the ratio 70:30. 70 % buckwheat flour and 30 % singhare ka  atta.
