FAQ about Ekadashi Fasting?

What is Ekadashi and why do we fast on Ekadashi?

Ekadashi is considered an auspicious day in Hindu and Jain culture. It takes place on the eleventh day of the two lunar cycles of the month, Krishna & Shukla Paksha. (Full moon and New Moon)

Ekadashi means the 11th day after the full moon and the 11th day after the new moon. In the Human physiological cycle, there are specific days, which may be different from person to person when the body does not demand food. If you identify those days and do not eat, a lot of health issues will be handled by that simple pattern.

More Scientific approach: One more reason as per Ayurveda, to my understanding, is, that twice a month, we should give our digestive system a service day and day off. When the body gets time to clean up and take a break from the routine chores. It’s like when you send your car to a service station. We need to give one day break every 11 days to the body to check and detoxify itself. It’s a healthy routine which we should all follow. During Fasting, we only eat Gluten-free foods along with healthy and easily digestible vegetables once a day. This is to maintain energy levels but not put the body on a regular 8 ours digestion cycle. In the morning, you just have some fruits and have the first meal at 5/6 pm in the evening.
